About Southwest University

Southwest University (SWU) is a key comprehensive university, under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It was established in July 2005 through the incorporation of former Southwest China Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University upon the approval of the Ministry of Education. SWU is one of the "211" project university, with a famous guard style campus, located at the foot of Jinyun Mountain, a state level scenic spot, near the beautiful Jialing River.

Originating from the East Sichuan Teachers College founde in 1906, SWU has developed its distinctive schooling characteristics in teacher education and agriculture research. It excels in a number of disciplines including education, psychology and agronomy. Among them, the silkworm genome research takes the lead in the world, and fundamental psychology and education have taken a national lead. Other great achievements include natural fallowing, silkworm gene bank, southwest ethnic education and psychology research, and human time cognition and so on.

SWU takes up about 600 hectares. It has 32 faculties/schools, covering a wide range of disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, sciences, engineering, agronomy, management and art, offering 5 state level key disciplines, 37 provincial/ministry level key disciplines, 18 postdoctoral programs, 21 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 1 professional doctoral program, 46 first-level discipline master programs, 19 professional master programs and 107 bachelor programs.

There are nearly 2700 professional teachers and over 600 professional researchers and a variety of students numbering over 100000, of whom 50000 are full-time undergraduates and postgraduates.
SWU is committed to international academic exchange and cooperation and has set up international cooperative and exchange programs with more than 200 universities and scientific institutions in more than 20 countries and regions. Since the 1950’s, SWU has been enrolling international students. Now, there are over 800 international students from 60 countries or regions studying at SWU for their bachelor, master, doctoral degrees or for Chinese language studies and improvement every year. 

Besides by applying Chinese Government Scholarship or Confucius Institute Scholarship, international students can also obtain chances of studying at SWU by applying for Chongqing Major Scholarship and SWU President Scholarship.
